Imiquimod Cream

Imiquimod Cream is used to treat actinic keratosis, superficial basal cell carcinoma and genital warts. Actinic keratoses can occur as a result of excess exposure to the sun, and cause growths to appear on the skin. Superficial basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer, and if surgery is deemed to be inappropriate, the doctor may prescribe this cream. This medicated cream is a type of immune response modifier, and it helps to trigger the release of chemicals in the skin (known as cytokines).

One of these cytokines is referred to as alpha interferon, and together with other cytokines, it helps to inhibit the multiplication of viral infections, which makes it effective at treating genital warts caused by HPV (human papilloma virus). When used for actinic keratoses or certain skin cancers, it helps the body to attack the abnormal cells responsible for symptoms.

Dosage and Administration
Patients treating skin conditions with Beselna Cream (Imiquimod) will be given application instructions specific to the condition being treated. If used for genital warts or warts appearing around the anus, it is possible that the doctor providing treatment will instruct the patient to apply a thin layer of cream to the warts 3 times per week, such as every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The cream is usually applied just before bedtime, and is allowed to remain on the warts for a period of 6 to 10 hours, after which it may be washed off. Doctors usually recommend continuing treatment until the warts disappear, or for a maximum of 16 weeks for each episode of warts. Treatment of actinic keratoses or basal cell carcinoma requires a different administration regimen, and patients must strictly follow the instructions that their doctor gives them.

Side effects
Beselna Cream (Imiquimod) may cause:

• Hard skin
• Skin blisters
• Symptoms of a cold
• Discolouration of the skin at application site
• Itchy or burning sensation affecting the treated skin

If any side effects occur, tell your doctor. Some patients may experience severe side effects, however, this is considered rare. You will need medical attention immediately if you notice bleeding, fever, severe irritation, fatigue, problems related to urination or any other serious side effects.
