Imatinib
Veenat 100 (Imatinib) is indicated for different types of cancers, in particular Philadelphia chromosome positive (Ph+) myelogenous leukaemia. It acts by affecting the growth of cancerous cells. Other applications include gastrointestinal stromal tumours (GIST, a rare type of cancer which affects the stomach and digestive system) and a skin cancer called DFSP (dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans) when it cannot be removed surgically.
Treatment of patients with Ph+ CML by means of this medicine can help to manage the symptoms and improve the MMR (major molecular response), meaning that the levels of BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase protein (the abnormal protein present in patients with Ph+ CML) is reduced. This drug is known as a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, and it helps to block the development of cancer cells. It specifically attacks the cancer cells (which have the tyrosine kinase protein) but not the non-cancerous healthy ones. This is often referred to as targeted therapy.
GISTs are believed to arise from cells in the gastrointestinal tract called ICCs (interstitial cells of Cajal). These cells play an important role in motility. An abnormal mutated protein called KIT is responsible for the tumours in most cases. By preventing phosphorylation of the KIT protein, it can help to treat GIST. Other indications include HES or CEL in certain circumstances, some myeloproliferative or myelodysplastic disorders with PDGFR gene rearrangements, and other types of cancers not listed here.
Dosage and Administration
Veenat 100 (Imatinib) is provided in capsule form. Each one contains 100mg of the active ingredient. Your doctor will provide you with specific instructions which are unique to you, based on the severity of symptoms, disease progression and the condition being treated (such as GIST, CML or dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans). Tests on platelet levels will most likely be ordered by your doctor, and the results of these tests will be used to determine the required dosage adjustments. Adults are usually directed to take it once or twice per day, together with food and water
